A hike into another world. Especially in autumn, after the alpine cows are back in the valley, an incredibly rewarding hike into the Glarus Alps. Over wide grass flanks and lonely mountain paths we climb up the Fanenstock and enjoy a breathtaking view into the glaring Sernftal. We start at the bus station Elm Station south-east into the side valley towards the Foopass. Follow the road to the valley station of the Tschinglen cable car at Zündli, from where hiking trail signs lead up the mountain. In the first part of the hike we climb up the path in the dense forest area to the Raminer Stäfeli. If you want to climb a little less steeply, you can also take the mountain road. We continue our ascent through the Gamperdunerwald and reach the Schindelegg clearing. Here we follow the Alpstrasse. A signpost shows us the direction to Ramin and Gamperdun. But we follow the road to the right up the pasture until we reach the alpine houses of Mittlelstafel. Afterwards the path to Fanenstock is indicated by markings. The last part of the hike is partly steep, but does not include any climbing sections. Beware of fog, the path is difficult to find near the summit in bad weather conditions. On the Fanenstock we enjoy an unbelievable view of the glarner Hauptüberschiebung (UNESCO world heritage) and the deep view into the SernftalTal. For inexperienced dogs with a lot of temperament I recommend to take the dog on a leash. On the other side of the summit the rock falls down steeply.
