Nathalie + Andy with Indira on July 24, 2026:

Today’s adventure begins right at “Unter dem Birg” near the Engstligenalp valley station. Free parking is available here. The trail starts off gently, and after just 15 minutes you reach the first waterfall.

From there, a challenging but beautiful trail leads upward, bringing you closer to the alpine high plateau step by step. Along the way, small streams cross the trail repeatedly, where the dog can cool off.
Shortly before the Engstligen Falls, the route splits, leading up to the alp. For the rest of the ascent, we chose the left path, as it’s slightly more shaded.

Once at the top, you’re immediately greeted by the unique, sweeping scenery of the Engstligenalp. After the climb, we’d more than earned our lunch. Surrounded by the imposing mountain landscape, the Engstligen rösti with bacon, egg, and cheese tastes twice as good.

Refreshed and re-energized, we then began the descent. To round out the hike perfectly, we chose the other side (Waterfall Loop) for the return trip.
This gave us entirely new perspectives on the valley and the surrounding peaks. Down by the waterfall, you can get up close to it and catch a cool breeze.
Afterward, we headed back to the starting point along the same path. Happy and with tired legs, we treat ourselves to another ice cream at the restaurant by the valley station.

An all-around perfect day in the mountains!

Sturdy footwear is recommended.
If you prefer, you can also take the gondola.
It’s best to do this hike early in the day and on a weekday.

PLEASE NOTE: Part of the route is located in a nature reserve
and you may encounter cows or cattle grazing along the route.
