Nathalie with Indira (from 25.10.19):

We enjoy one of the last beautiful autumn days and set off towards the Niederhorn.

You can park your car in the car park (all day 7th) near the Beatenbucht, where the funicular railway is located and where the hiking trail begins. We follow the signs in the direction of the Beatus Caves. The path is wide and climbs gently into the forest, which gradually sheds its beautifully coloured autumn leaves. Right from the start, there is a nature reserve and dogs must be kept on a leash.

On the way, you can look through the trees and enjoy a view of Lake Thun, and cosy spots invite you to linger. After a while the path splits and we follow the direction of Beatenberg. If you like, you can also just have a look at the Beatus Caves, which are of course also worth a visit. Except for the Beatenberg, the path leads almost exclusively through the forest, and in between you will pass a few pretty little houses and the funicular railway. On the Beatenberg you have the opportunity to stop for a bite to eat. Since the large hotel and the old people's residence seem a bit too touristy for me, we continue towards the Niederhorn, which is still covered in thick fog. From here, the route continues steadily upwards over steps and pastures, which is quite a strain on the legs. But the path is very well developed and can be done with a dog.

Just in time for arrival the sun pushes through, the fog disappears as if by magic and you get a wonderful mountain panorama as far as Lake Thun. If you wish, you can take a break in the restaurant or linger outside on the various benches and sun loungers. We enjoy the warming sun outside until the fog comes back up and then we go down again with the gondola / funicular. If you don't want to walk all the way up, you also have the option of going as far as Beatenberg or Vorsass. We were on our own for the whole route up. As it has grazing cows in the summer and is a well-visited place for tourism, it is recommended to do the hike in autumn and during the week.
