Galm - Liebistorf

In 1803, Napoleon Bonaparte assigned the Galm Forest to the canton of Fribourg through the Mediation Act. Thus, it became a state forest and ultimately a unique phenomenon in Switzerland. To this day, the area has not been assigned to any municipality. That sounded so special to us that we wanted to check out this forest. We parked our car in Ulmiz near the school. It took us just a few minutes to reach the forest. At the entrance to the forest, there’s a nice outhouse and a forest hut with a fire pit. Up here in the forest, there are also a few parking spots. The forest is very diverse, with beech, fir, and oak trees, as well as clearings, and the leaves are already changing color—a sign of autumn. After nearly an hour, we reached the charming Galmhütte, which has another fire pit and another outhouse. We also kept coming across lovely wooden benches where we could rest. Soon we reached the Galmelin Nature Trail, where we were able to learn quite a bit (www.galm.ch). After a good two hours of hiking, we arrive in Liebistorf. There’s a charming restaurant and a church here. We search for a geocache near the lovely little bakery and then take the PostBus back to Ulmiz.
