Nathalie with Indira (from 06.11.18):

I parked and started in Mülenen, right by the Niesenbahn. Indira and I follow the hiking trail sign over the bridge and then towards Niesen. The hiking trail is not to be missed. Right at the beginning the path climbs up and after a short time it leads over an alpine meadow. Since it is already Nov., there are no cows to be found and we can continue our hike in peace and quiet and fill up the water bottles again at a well near an alpine hut. After a while we reach the mountain road and walk a short distance on it. Further up the path splits again and we follow the signpost Schwandegg Niesen. We enjoy the warm sun and the wonderful colours of the forest..... At the next signpost we continue on the wide forest path and do NOT follow the steep path (written on the signpost) because there was a lot of leaves. We are welcomed by curious goats, but they soon take flight. The path becomes narrow and meanders further through the forest, up the mountain. At the Schwandegg middle station we take a short break and catch a glimpse of the lakes of Thun and Brienz. As we only started at noon and some clouds were visible in the sky, we continue our hike, as the weather can change quickly in the mountains. Again and again I enjoy the sensational view of the alpine panorama and the lakes. On the top of the Niesen I sit down with Indira in the restaurant as thick fog has formed very quickly and it became suddenly cold. For overnight stays in the hotel itself and on special evening trips dogs are unfortunately not welcome (please inform yourself in advance). Down it goes comfortably with the train (change in the middle station). The hiking trail is steep and narrow (partly secured). Sure-footedness is required and you should be free from giddiness. Nevertheless I would classify the way rather as harmless and with dog well feasible. Routes are also very popular with trail runners. Now in Nov. I have hardly met anybody on the whole route. The ascent is totally worth it, because you are rewarded with a wonderful panorama and comfortable places. If this is too strenuous for you, you can walk only a part of the route and tackle the rest by train.
