Andrea Norinelli with Nikin & Pax (from 14.07.24):

The hike starts directly at Arosa train station. The first part of the walk is uphill through the beautiful squirrel forest. Important: please keep your dogs on a lead. The squirrels are very trusting and dogs that want to "play" or chase are rather out of place.

At first, the route leads uphill along well-maintained paths, but this soon ends and the route turns into beautiful mountain trails. Leaving the tree line behind you, the route crosses meadows with alpine roses, past small mountain lakes and onwards and upwards towards the summit.

This is reached after a steep ascent via the ski slope. Once at the top, you are not only rewarded with a fantastic panoramic view of the Grisons Alps, but can also enjoy some culinary refreshments in the restaurant.

The way back down is very steep on zig-zagging trails and across green alpine meadows. Note: there are marmots everywhere, so please keep your dogs on a lead. At the end, you return to the train station via well-maintained hiking trails.

As Arosa is very popular with mountain bikers, there are many oncoming downhill riders, especially on the ascent. They are very grateful if you take the dogs with you and let them pass. A little breather is included :-).

There may be cows on certain sections in midsummer. We didn't come across any in July, but there are drinking troughs and fences.

The hike requires a good level of fitness and surefootedness. It is very steep towards the end, especially on the ascent, and the same applies to the descent. At one point below the summit, a head for heights is an advantage, but you can also walk a little further away.
There are always drinking facilities for the dogs along the way. However, it is advisable to carry enough water for the dogs yourself, as there may not be any drinking facilities up to the summit in a dry summer.

The hike is suitable for anyone who likes to cover a lot of altitude, enjoys more challenging tours and loves the high mountains. The nature, the panorama and the beautiful paths reward all efforts on this hike!
