The Arosa Bear Land

The Arosa Bear Land

The first bear sanctuary in Switzerland offers up to five brown bears from poor husbandry conditions a species-appropriate home in the middle of the wonderful nature of Arosa. The bear country, which covers almost three hectares, is located below the middle station of the Arosa-Weisshorn cable car.
Arosa is very proud of the realisation of this major animal welfare project and celebrated the opening of the Arosa Bear Land on the first weekend of August 2018 after more than eight years of project work. Together with the animal welfare organisation VIER PFOTEN, the Arosa Bears Foundation realised the innovative and sustainable project. Bears that used to live chained up in a tiny cage will be freed from their miserable situation and brought to Arosa. Amidst the natural mountain landscape with pastures, bushes, rocks, several ponds and forest, the bears can find their way back to their natural behaviour. And the visitors can watch them do so.
At an altitude of over 2000 metres above sea level, visitors are offered a unique experience in a sustainable way. In the entrance area of the new visitor centre, various stories of the bears are told, films of the rescue are shown and interactive information is provided. The visitor platform prepares information specifically for children and adults. Finally, the bears can be observed in the outdoor area in the middle of nature. Of course, care is also provided for the bears, three animal keepers and a vet look after the well-being of the Arosa bears. Next to the visitor platform, the bear mini golf and the bear adventure playground nearby offer fun for the whole family and invite to stay. 12-year-old Napa, the first inhabitant of the Arosa Bear Land, was already freed from his predicament in 2016 as the last Serbian circus bear and can now enjoy a wonderful life thanks to Arosa and FOUR PAWS in the Bear Land.

Opening hours
The visitor platform is open daily from 9:00 to 17:40 until 21 October 2018. During the November high, the bear country will then be accessible on weekends at the same times, provided Napa is not in hibernation. The last gondola of the Arosa mountain railways leaves for the valley at 5.40 p.m. Dogs are permitted on the visitor platform (leashed).

Prices
Admission costs CHF 5 for all overnight guests in the all-inclusive offer and CHF 20 for day guests (including the cable car ride to the middle station). Children pay CHF 3 and CHF 10 respectively. Dogs travel free of charge.
